From Tirana airport to the city (and up to Fresku)

The first hour in a new city sets the tone. Here is how to get from Tirana's airport to the centre — and on up to a quiet base — without hiring a car.

Where is Tirana airport?

Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza — you will also hear it called Rinas, after the village next to it — is the country's main airport, about 17 kilometres northwest of the city centre. The drive is short: roughly 30 minutes in normal conditions, up to about an hour when the approach roads are busy. Both names point to the same airport, so don't be thrown by the two labels.

The cheapest way in: the Rinas Express shuttle

The Rinas Express shuttle bus is the budget option and a good one. It runs 24 hours a day to Skanderbeg Square in the middle of Tirana, and costs around 400 lek (about €4). If you are travelling light and happy to finish the journey from the central square, it is hard to beat on price. Full details and current timings are on guides like Welcome Pickups.

The door-to-door options: taxi or transfer

If you land late, have luggage, or simply want to go straight to your address, take a taxi or a pre-booked transfer. Both wait at the terminal; a transfer booked in advance has the advantage of a fixed price and a driver holding your name, which is worth a little extra after a long flight. This is also the simplest way to go all the way to a hillside address in one hop, rather than changing in the centre.

Getting up to a quiet base like Fresku

Most of the calm, residential neighbourhoods are uphill on the eastern edge of the city, on the way toward Dajti Mountain. Fresku is one of them, about ten to fifteen minutes further by car beyond the centre. Two easy ways to get there:

  • One transfer from the airport. Ask your driver to take you the whole way; you skip the central hand-off entirely.
  • Shuttle, then a short taxi. Take the Rinas Express to Skanderbeg Square, then a brief taxi ride uphill.

Either works. If you are arriving to a stay we host, it is easy to arrange the smoother of the two in advance so you arrive to a calm street rather than a busy square.

A quick arrival checklist

  • Some cash in lek helps for the shuttle and small taxis, though cards are increasingly accepted.
  • A data connection — an eSIM or local SIM — makes ordering a ride and finding your address far easier.
  • Your address written down (and the host's number) saves confusion if a driver doesn't know the street.

That's the whole journey: land, choose shuttle or transfer, and be settled on a quiet street within the hour. When you're ready to plan the stay itself, check availability or read the full Fresku guide.
